Freshers took place at Little Manhattan residence on the 20th of May 2023. The reason for the event was to freshen up students’ minds, allow them to distress them from their academic and to enjoy themselves before they write exams.

The event was not only for the Manhattan students, some students from other residence were also invited but were charged an entrance fee of R100. Due to not having electricity on that day, the event did not start at the promised time. The residence manager had to organise a generator because it was getting late and the event hadn’t started.

The event started around 19:00 and there were few people because students thought the event is no longer happening. The majority of students were wearing jeans, sneakers and jackets and some were wearing their tracksuits and T-shirts. They were bouncers were around the stage to provide for security.

DJ Cross Black, a well-known DJ locally was the first DJ on stage, he played the best remix of Amapiano music and students were enjoying and began filling up the place. Students screamed their lungs out when he played the third song called “Hamba juba”.

As some were dancing and singing, some were sitting on the branches drinking. Students showed their excitement through being live, and posting on their social media accounts.

Romeo Makota started performing and brought excitement to students through his amazing vibe and performance.

The event was exciting and enjoyable, and it would have been more enjoyable if there was electricity and if the event started earlier as promised, because the local DJs had to leave after some time.

This is what some of the students had to say about the event.

Fezile Mahamba

I really enjoyed the event; the vibe was impressing, and my highlight of the event was seeing DJ Cross Black on stage because I had always wanted to watch him performing live.

Mondli Dlamini

The vibe was on fire and exciting. I enjoyed being at the event because it was something I really needed to distress from my academic stress. I would just rate the event 9/10.

Lathitha Yayi

The event was fun and enjoyable but the boring thing was us not having electricity we had to empty our pockets and buy takeaways before the event started.
