Lazola Chiliwe is 23 years old is a student at Nelson Mandela University studying Bachelor of Fine Arts. He was born in Eastern Cape at Gqeberha. As a photographer who comes from humble beginnings, he managed to get his first camera through selling ice blocks at campus, and around the community on his free time.

Lazola said that he is patient about his craft and uses photography as a way of telling people’s stories. He discovered his passion at the age of 10. He always volunteered to take his siblings pictures every time and would borrow his parents’ phone to capture interesting things he came across.

“My business of being a photographer started to be recognised when I bought my first camera and I would go to the beach and shoot people. I would post those pictures on my Facebook and Instagram accounts and that is when people recognised and loved my work and started to make bookings,” Lazola explained how he got recognition.

He mentioned that he liked what he was doing, and people liked the way he captured pictures, so in a way, it was an experiment that worked. For a long time, he kept thinking it was all going to crumble down, but because of the faith and his patience, it all worked out for him.

When he was first asked to be a photographer at a ward councillor’s wedding, he said it felt like a dream because he was used to taking pictures of people at the beach and now, he was called to a big event, it felt his dreams are coming through for him.

“There is that amazing feeling I feel when I have taken a great picture, almost like it is bigger and better than myself with a life of its own,” he added.

This is what his clients had to say had to say about Lazola Chiliwe’s work.

Lazola and I have been friends for years now. I have seen his passion; he wants what’s best for himself and I have seen him working hard to be where he is now. I am so proud of him.

I heard people saying Lazola is the best photographer in township, so I invited him to be a photographer at my wedding and the first thing I like about him he is always on time, and he will do what you asked for and capture beautiful pictures.

Lazola gave motivation to anyone who has a dream of becoming a photographer, and he said, “If someone wants something, he or she must go for it and never give up, and practising makes it perfect. The more you capture pictures every time, the faster you learn, and the better you do.”
